Heading to Africa

Today (Wednesday) is a travel day, a long, long travel day that’s starting at 7am and will end at 6pm on Thursday when we finally get to Kenya. Travel includes feet, a minibus, ferry, sky train, train, airplane and I’m sure something else I’ve forgotten.

I’ll have cell service for some of it so I’ll update this post as it progresses.

Waiting on a mini bus

Update: packed in like sardines in today’s minibus.  I also realize now that the only thing worse than a minibus driver in Thailand is a minibus driver on a mountainous island of Thailand! Hairpin switchbacks at 20mph is better than a roller coaster with 11 of your closest friends.  On the plus side, at least he left the A/C on.

The ferry was uneventful even if it was a different boat than last time.

Well that minibus ride was the worst… Dude was doing 75 (thanks speedometer app!) weaving in and out of traffic and just generally a bad driver! At our first stop for fuel (LNG btw) one person switched busses which was great since we were sitting 4 wide in the very back!  Only problem is the seats are divided! So I got to ride on the un padded hump divider!  At the next roadside stop we were told to get in a different bus because ours wasn’t going to victory monument… WHAT? We’re on the wrong bus and you just now decided to tell me!

The new bus driver is generally a better driver so far and hopefully our seats go where we expect, and the backpacks don’t fall on my head!

(Ashley is not amused)

Now we’re stopping again as he yells “5 min its” <sigh> this bus needs LNG I guess

At least they have plenty of snacks!

I had the crispy grapes, still haven’t tried the shrimp flavored ones

Yes this is a small truck loaded over the top with beer

Further update upon arriving in Bangkok, the second driver is a psychopath.  Seriously we all thought we’d die.  I thought the first minibus was bad, or the second… Well, they only had crappy roads to deal with.  Add in traffic and OMG it was bad, a few times I thought we’d run over a person when we hit “something ” in the road that was obviously  just us leaving a broken axle behind!

The driver threw us all so far towards the windshield with an “oh $h!t” brake that everyone in the bus did a synchronized seat belting!  After the Chinese couple in the very back were joined with everyone’s luggage in their lap!

If we ever come back, I will not take a minibus anywhere near a city like Bangkok!

We grabbed a nice lunch in an alleyway

And then hit the sky train “monorail”

Think Disney monorail with about 500 ppl per car! By far the busiest (crowded) public transport we’ve used, can’t you tell the girls are thrilled they finally founds seat 😃

I’d read “it’s a good way to see the city” well I don’t know what they were thinking but I couldn’t see anything except a bunch of Thai armpits!

We came to the airport 5 hours early because Bangkok in the rain just wasn’t doing it for us

I’m not sure I want to know what a sky train is, but I’m looking forward to hearing that you arrived safely

You all are beginning to look wore out. Hopefully you will have some time to rest along the way. Stay safe and careful. Love you.

This was a long travel day, over 36 hours with only a spit bath, yes we were tired!

“If looks could kill” comes to mind. Hope things get better VERY soon.

Their facial expressions are cracking me up. I agree ^^^ “if looks could kill”. I hope you have something fun planned soon 😂😂😂 !

From the looks on their faces, the only thing keeping you alive is the fact they need you to get them home !!!

      ^^^ Hahaha! 😂😂😂

I agree on the “if looks could kill”. You are going to have to find something really good to make up for that exciting journey. Lol.
Sara plus an over crowded anything doesn’t set well with her. And it’s obvious in her face.
It is painfully obvious that this leg of your journey is one that will be long remembered.
Sara I love you. The princess room is waiting on you.

Funny thing is, most everyone knows none of us go for crowds. We mentally prepared for it and so far, it’s been fine. I have a knack for taking candid pictures of them and posting them much to their chagrin! All in all memories have abounded and no one has really lost it yet. Not to say there haven’t been moments of hunger or tired
