I’m laying alone in a two person tent in the rain on the African Savannah in complete disbelief. Am I really doing this? are we really here? I guess I just became completely awestruck when the giraffe poked it’s head up out of a tree in a ravine today. Holy crap, this trip, this experience, this everything… I can’t believe it’s real, We’re doing it and it has worked so well (so far)
We have a driver, Joseph
A “mother, father, cook” Stephen
And 2 Masai tribesmen John and Jonathan who stand guard all night (they even escort you to the bathroom in the middle of the night!)
All of these ppl are here for us 3. We’ve had a completely private. Safari experience… Almost too private, really. I think during the busy season they may have up to 10-15 in camp at a time but for now it’s just us 3
I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that everyone is amazing and has great hospitality but, somehow I am. Is it that America has lowered my standards so far? or possibly that I am just jaded in expectations?.. I wish I knew. So far best camping and safaris has done a fantastic job!
This is pretty close to roughing it (we do have running /hot water) and a generator for about 2.5 hours a night to charge batteries
They have given us 3 square meals a day, and Stephen has actually taught me a few things about cooking I didn’t know!
The first night we even had “deep” fish and potatoes (with cabbage and fresh pineapple) who knew we’d come to the African Savannah and have fried fish!
We’ve seen some amazing sights, I wish words could do it justice but they can’t, even pictures and video can’t describe the scene of 14 giraffes and a huge herd of zebras crossing the rolling plain in front of you. Or seeing a leopard climb the biggest cactus tree you’ve ever seen and just hang out growling for its mom who was across the field. Or, seeing saras face light up 1000 times over when we finally found 2 families of elephants just casually crossing a field. Even more so when we later found a herd of about 30 elephants. This is simply a majestic majestic place!
I think the list of things we know we’ve seen looks like this
- Zebras
- Grants gazelles
- Impallas
- Topi’s (sp?)
- Giraffes
- Ostriches
- Lion
- Cheetahs
- Leopards
- Baboons
- Elephants
- Cape buffalos
- Ground cranes
- Hippopotamus
- Wart hogs
- Hyena
- Jackal
- Banded mongoose (is it mongeese? As in a flock of mongeese?)
- Wildabeast
- Dozens of types of rainbow colored birds I wish I knew what they were
A common sight on the road was people riding donkeys with “stuff” attached
We stopped for a time at the great Rift Valley (the shops are built out over the edge!)
The entrance to the park
Lions!
Topi’s
Sara’s selfie with the elephants
Our accommodations
The hot water heater, on the end it said “jet a fuel” (I hope not!)
They build fences around the camps out of pencil cactus and other thorny un happy plants
These giant cacti trees are amazing
Even though our final nights hotel (tonight) is 1000% sketchy Sara still loves me, hopefully we survive the night 😃
Wow!!! What a fabulous adventure! Happy Fathers Day! Couldn’t imagine a more amazing way to spend it.
Thanks, it was fun and Father’s Day was bittersweet in a way since I didn’t (couldn’t) talk to my dad’s. Txt just isn’t the same
When you get home you have to have a big get together & show us all the pictures & movies of all your adventures. I’ll volunteer Aunt Pam to pop the popcorn. 😀😀😀. What a great adventure you are having. The trip of a lifetime.
I’m ready! =)
Whenever your ready! The longer we wait the more polished the pictures and videos will be and the less sharp the random tiny memories will be of the things I haven’t written about
What an awesome adventure. The look on Sara’s face says you more than made up for the monorail adventure
Love ya.
