Layover stops

If you’ve never taken a layover tour/stop, I highly recommend it. So far our 3 have been fantastic intros to the cities and countries and in some cases, that’s all we needed/wanted!

We have one more “airline layover stop” left on this trip (London) The best part is as long as you stay 1 minute less than 24 hours, it’s treated the same as a 1-2 hour layover by the airlines… I also know Addis Ababa, Cairo and Istanbul will actually take care of you (hotel or tour) if you have more than 6 hours for a layover and I expect other airlines will do the same in different cities.  
The worst part of layover tours so far is that some countries want a fee for the visa (75$ in Egypt for instance) and it kinda seems like a waste to use a 90 day visa for 3 hours but it’s still worth the price to see one of (the last standing) 7 wonders of the world
It may seem counter intuitive to make a 12-36 hour travel day but adding a destination of interest is well worth the time since a lot of times it can be done by really only adding 4 hours to a regular 2 hour layover and you’re not stuck in an airport to boot! 

Oh, one note, to make it work, you typically have to get creative in searching airlines sites to get the airline to sell you the ticket.  Nairobi-Cairo-Vienna-Milan is not a routing that will show up in basic searching but, it’s where were flying right now.  

I learned a lot in planning this trip and if any of y’all have questions, feel free to ask.  It wasn’t exactly simple to do this all with airline miles when you fly as little as we do.  

Some day after we get back, I’ll write some followup posts about how I planned this whole thing, including a bit about the conclusion of this round the world trip we have planned for January.  Somehow mine and Ashleys bosses (who are probably reading this😃) frowned when we asked for more than 4 weeks off at one time so, we broke the trip up.  This is all assuming we haven’t blown our tiny budget for the first “leg” of the trip.
